Common study abroad questions

Short answers to the questions students ask most while applying abroad.

Can I apply after the deadline?

Each scholarship or university sets its own deadline, and nrol can't extend it. Some providers won't accept late applications at all, so check with them directly. To stay safe, set your own deadline 1–2 weeks before the real one, and give recommenders at least 3–4 weeks.

From the Help centre

How do I know my application was received?

After you submit on the official website, it usually gives you a submission receipt and an acknowledgment number. Keep both as proof. You can record the submission in nrol's Applications page, which keeps your timeline, next steps and documents together. If you haven't heard anything, contact the provider and quote your reference.

Why is my score low, and what can I do?

Scores reflect what's on your profile, so a low score usually means something is missing or not yet checked. Fill in the gaps, add real achievements and upload your documents. Then look at “Clear this first” and the What Am I Missing? tool for the biggest fixes.

A low score isn't a verdict on your potential, and it isn't a prediction.

What is the success rate of scholarships?

It differs a lot from one scholarship to another, and nrol doesn't publish a single figure because it couldn't be defended. Popular scholarships get hundreds of strong applicants. nrol also doesn't predict your own chance of selection. What it can show is how well you fit, how ready you are and what to improve.

From the FAQ

Can I work part-time while studying abroad?

It depends on the country and your visa, and the rules change. So nrol shows work-rights information as a dated summary with a link to the official source, not as a general rule. Check the official immigration site before you decide. And don't build your budget on uncertain part-time income.

From the Visa Guide and University Universe

How much does it cost to study in a particular country?

It varies by country, city and course, and it changes, so nrol doesn't quote one price per country. For supported programmes it shows a cost estimate with its source. The Financial Reality Mapper tool tests whether your budget works, and the University Universe guide shows how to add up the full cost.

Always check each university's current fees.

How do I pay a university's deposit?

Every university sets its own method, so follow the instructions in your offer letter or on its official site. A seat deposit confirms that you'll enrol, and it can be hard to get back, so check the refund terms first and plan for it before scholarship results arrive.

Do I need the GRE or GMAT?

That's decided by each programme, and many don't ask for one, so check the programme's official page. In nrol, you can record a GRE or GMAT score in My Profile if you have one, and leave it blank if you don't. nrol's opportunity pages list the criteria and documents it has on record, with a link to the official source.

Which tests can I keep track of in nrol, and does nrol help me prepare?

You can record a GRE or GMAT score and your English test status in My Profile. You can also upload IELTS, TOEFL and PTE score reports to your Document Center. nrol's Prep4 gives you IELTS practice, with other tests planned.

Which tests you actually need depends on each programme, so always check its official requirements.

Can I apply without an English test?

It depends on the scholarship or programme, and some accept other proof, so check the official requirement on its page. nrol's profile asks for your English test status so it can flag admission and visa readiness. If you don't have a score yet, you can leave it blank and see what's missing in your gap check.

Will my degree be accepted abroad?

Recognition and entry rules are set by each university and country, so nrol can't give one answer for everyone. nrol does record your academic background in your profile. It compares it with the criteria it has on record for each opportunity, and shows your gaps with a link to the official source. Confirm recognition of your degree with the university itself.

How does nrol help me choose between courses, such as Master's vs PhD, or MSc vs MBA?

nrol doesn't pick for you, but it helps you compare. The pathway tools, including Opportunity Path Explorer and Destination Intelligence, use your profile and goals to show the trade-offs. If you're starting out, Pathfinder explains the options first. Your Master's or PhD route then shows up as matches with reasons and gaps.

Who handles translation, attestation, apostille or credential evaluation of my documents?

The university, scholarship or immigration authority decides what it needs, so follow its official instructions. nrol's Document Center stores your documents by type and shows checks such as readability, completeness and expiry.

That status doesn't translate, certify, notarise or apostille anything, and it doesn't guarantee a provider will accept the file.

How does nrol help with my CV or resume?

My Resume turns your profile and verified-document signals into a readable resume. You can edit the About section, print or save it as a PDF, and create or switch off a read-only sharing link. You can also upload your own CV to the Document Center. Formats differ between programmes and countries, so follow each one's instructions.

Can I share my details with a counsellor or mentor?

You can share a read-only link to your resume from My Resume, and switch it off any time. It isn't an application and doesn't show your whole account. Family Access is different: it's for parents or guardians, and only with your consent. nrol accounts are for people aged 18 or over.

Does nrol help with accommodation, flights, packing or a bank account abroad?

nrol focuses on discovery, preparation, funding and applications. For supported cities, it shows verified monthly cost estimates for accommodation, food, transport and utilities, with sources, and the Financial Reality Mapper tests whether your budget works. For housing, flights and bank accounts themselves, use your university's guidance and official sources.

Can my family or spouse come with me?

That depends on the visa and country, so check the official immigration source linked from nrol's Visa Guide for your destination. nrol's Family Access is something different: it lets a parent or guardian follow your progress, with your consent, and doesn't affect visas.

From the Visa Guide

Is studying abroad worth it, and will I get a job afterwards?

nrol can't predict your career, and it doesn't promise outcomes. What it can show is whether your budget works, an estimated total cost and payback context from dated, sourced occupation earnings. Career alignment is directional guidance, not a verified placement result for a course. Use these to decide with open eyes.

From the Financial Reality tools

Can nrol help me with an education loan or currency conversion?

nrol doesn't arrange or approve loans. Its borrowing calculator shows what a loan could look like, which is not a quote, and you can record loan amounts and currencies as funding sources. Use your bank's figures and the official rate for final numbers, and stress-test your budget against exchange-rate changes.

Which universities are best for my subject, or cheapest, or accept my grades?

nrol doesn't publish a ranking. University Discovery recommends routes for you based on your level, field, countries, funding goals and readiness, and only where a real programme route exists. Your readiness and labels like “Borderline — gaps fixable” show how you stand. Fees, grade cut-offs and fee waivers are set by each university, so check its official page.

From University Discovery

Are there scholarships for my background, subject or nationality?

nrol matches awards using your profile and the eligibility criteria it has on record for each, and every card links to the official source. We don't claim to list every scholarship for every group, and an award can have conditions we haven't recorded. Read each award's eligibility before you invest time.

Is a particular scholarship open right now?

Whether it's open depends on its current cycle. Each award in nrol shows its deadline status and a link to the official page. A date nrol hasn't confirmed is labelled as being checked, and an estimated opening date in your calendar is only a planning guess. Always confirm on the official source.

Is there a nrol app, and can I use it on my phone?

nrol is used through its website, nrol.me, which is its only official address. I don't have details about a separate mobile app, so check nrol.me or ask the support team. If you see another app or site using the nrol name, make sure it's nrol.me before you sign up or enter any information.

I've just finished 12th. How do I start?

If you're 18 or over, create an account, choose the beginner option and start with Pathfinder, which explains the route step by step. If you're under 18, you can read the public guides now and sign up when you turn 18.
